In an unprecedented collaboration, the Campaign to Control Cancer, the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the International Union Against Cancer have joined forces to issue a global call to action – the urgent need to Go Public.  As publics organize and mobilize like never before, the time is right to create a new social climate about cancer control – one that engages the public in support of a new global response to cancer.

The GOPUBLIC – Global Forum/Community Conversations campaign for public engagement launched across the globe on Feb.4th – World Cancer Day.

Project False Hope

One of the initiatives in the Competition Bureau’s continuing health fraud efforts, Project False Hope targets cancer-related health fraud through a combined enforcement and education campaign.  Most recently the Competition Bureau has developed a Cancer Fraud Awareness Pamphlet in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society. The pamphlet is designed to alert people to the issue of health fraud, to direct them to the Bureau to learn how to avoid falling victim to it or to the Canadian Cancer Society for assistance in dealing with their cancer diagnosis. The Canadian Cancer Society will be distributing approximately 50,000 pamphlets across Canada.

Additionally, the Competition Bureau has developed two interactive educational web tools. The first is a mock web site selling a fictitious cancer cure which teaches you how to identify some of the tactics often used by scammers, called the "Anatomy of an Online Health Scam." The second is the "Health Fraud Awareness Quiz" which tests your knowledge of those tactics.

You can find more information about the Bureau's Project False Hope on their web page: http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/02614.html

Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC)

Each year on February 4th, worldwide cancer control is highlighted with the International Union Against Cancer's World Cancer Day. To mark this World Cancer Day, we are pleased to announce the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer’s Progress Report.

While cancer continues to be a great challenge, Canada is taking steps to better meet that challenge.  We think you will be most interested to read of the progress that the Partnership has made since it began operations in 2007.

To register for e-bulletins, visit the CPAC website or e-mail at info@partnershipagainstcancer.ca.

CNA publications to support your practice during a pandemic or other emergency

  • Ethics in Practice series, Social Justice in Practice (CNA, 2009)
  • CNA Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses  (CNA, 2008) - See Part 1 (page 9) under Providing Safe, Compassionate, Competent and Ethical Care under Ethical Responsibility 8, it states During a natural or human-made disaster, including a communcable disease outbreak, nusese have a duty to provide care using appropriate safety precautions (http://www.cna-aiic.ca/CNA/practice/ethics/code/default_e.aspx)
  • Also, the Code - see Appendix D on Ethical Considerations for Nurses in a Natural Disaster, Communicable Disease Outbreak or Pandemic (page 46). This section discusses issues that can also easily lend themselves to the application of CNA's Social Justice Tool as it discusses unreasonable burden (unreasonable expectations, lack of resources or ongoing threats to personal well-being). It gives a list of questions to consider when contemplating obligation. It addresses the nurses' right to receive truthful and complete information so that they can fulfil their duty to provide care etc. This section has references to CRNBC and CRNNS.
